Who to Talk To and What to Ask For

Facilities Managers

  • What systems are in place at your facility?
  • What systems can be brought in? For example, is composting available or obtainable? What would that look like?
  • What directions need to go to the cast and crew to have a successful composting system?

Construction Coordinator

  • What materials do they anticipate being able to recycle?
  • Can they research appropriate vendors/systems (for example, wood or metal recycling dumpsters)?
  • Do any vendors offer take-back programs for materials?

Locations Manager

  • Which hauler is the preferred vendor?
  • What recycling/composting options can be available on set as well as for prep and wrap?
  • Will the vendor provide diversion reports that can be shared with financiers, studio execs, cast, and crew?

Production Coordinator

  • Which hauler is the preferred vendor?
  • What recycling/composting options can be available at the production office and facilities?
  • If you are using a recycling vendor, share the list of recyclable materials with all departments so that they can also participate in waste reduction efforts.
  • Will the vendor provide diversion reports that can be shared with financiers, studio execs, cast, and crew?
  • Is the office able to arrange for special recycling or safe disposal handling for electronic waste and other special cases?

Paint/Set Dec

  • What paint recycling services are available in our area? (For example, PaintCare is a free service that takes leftover paint in the original cans.)
  • What organizations (such as Habitat for Humanity) will accept partially full cans?

Cast and Crew

Once your production’s waste management systems are in place, notify the cast and crew so that they can contribute to waste reduction.
